Jonathan Tamayo Wins Record-Breaking $10K Main Event WSOP 2024 ($10M)

$10K WSOP Main Event 2024 attracted a record number of players: 10,112. This is 69 more than last year. The final table game lasted 235 hands.

Malo Latinos finished 9th ($1M)

He lost a coin flip with AKs vs. Jordan Griff’s 33 for a 15 BB pot. Board: AT93A.

Joe Serock finished 8th ($1.25M)

Jordan Griff opened from UTG. Niklas Astedt on SB called. Joe Serock on BB went all-in for 20 BB with AJo. Jordan Griff folded 77, Astedt called with QQ — the trap was sprung. Board: T94J8.

Brian Kim finished 7th ($1.5M)

This is one of the most talked-about hands from the final table. Kim started the final table with the second-largest stack but had fallen to the sixth-largest stack by this point.

Boris Angelov opened from BTN to 2.3 BB. Kim on SB 3-bet to 5.9 BB. Niklas Astedt on BB 4-bet to 9.5 BB. Angelov quickly folded. Kim pushed for 27 BB. Astedt asked for a count and called.

Kim showed K6s, Astedt showed TT. Astedt hit a set on the flop, Angelov picked up a flush draw on the turn, but the river was a blank.

At 6-max, future champion Jonathan Tamayo was down to 12 BB but doubled up with A9o against Jordan Griff’s AKo— hitting a nine on the river — moving up to third in the chip count.

A few hands later, Tamayo doubled up again. Astedt opened from SB with pocket tens, Tamayo defended BB with KQo. The flop was AJT. Tamayo check-called three streets with all-in on the river.

Andres Gonzalez finished 6th ($2M)

Gonzalez made a 4-bet shove for 20.5 BB with JJ, Astedt called with AQo — a king came on the flop.

Boris Angelov finished 5th ($2.5M)

Angelov shoved for 6 BB with pocket sixes, Jonathan Tamayo on BB called with K6o. A king hit the flop, another king on the turn, river was a blank.

Jason Sagle finished 4th ($3M)

Astedt opened from UTG. Sagle on BB, the shortest stack, went all-in for 9.3 BB. After two minutes of thought, Astedt called. Showdown: Sagle with jacks, Astedt with A3. Board: 84352.

After Sagle’s elimination, the players took a break and returned to the table the next day.

On the turn J♣️, Griff went all-in for 40 BB. After some thought, Astedt called.

Showdown: Griff’s 9♣️ 9♠️, Astedt’s K♠️ J♦️. River: K♥️.

Jordan Griff finished 2nd ($6M)

Heads-up lasted another 65 hands (about 4 hours). Griff initially built a three-to-one lead, but Tamayo managed to come back. Tamayo won a showdown with KTo against 77 for a 77 BB pot — making a straight on the flop.

In the final hand, Tamayo opened, Griff called. On the 983 board, Tamayo made a continuation bet, Griff raised, and Tamayo shoved. Griff called. Showdown: Griff’s 96, Tamayo’s 83. Turn: A. River: 5.

Jonathan Tamayo is 38 years old. He got into poker during college while studying hotel management at Cornell University. His first ITM at the WSOP was in 2007. He has won four WSOP Circuit rings:

  • 2012 — $355 NLHE WSOP Circuit – HARRAH’S NEW ORLEANS ($28.1K)
  • 2013 — $1,675 Main Event WSOP Circuit – PALM BEACH KENNEL CLUB Florida ($206K)
  • 2017 — $365 NLHE Re-Entry WSOP Circuit – HORSESHOE HAMMOND ($101.4K)
  • 2018 — $580 PLO WSOP Circuit – THE BICYCLE CASINO Los Angeles ($10.1K)

In 2009, he finished 21st in the $10K Main Event WSOP, earning $352.8K — his best cash until last night. Tamayo admitted he never thought he’d have another chance to go deep in the Main Event, let alone win it.

In 2015, Joe McKeehen won the WSOP Main Event bracelet — Tamayo was standing next to him on the left in the photo.

In 2024, Joe McKeehen presented the WSOP Main Event winner’s bracelet to Jonathan Tamayo.

WSOP Paradise returns to the Bahamas

The series will take place from December 6 to 19. The total guarantee for the series will be $50M. The full schedule has not yet been published. It is known that the Main Event will have a $25K buy-in and a $50M guarantee — a record for a single tournament guarantee. It is also known that the series will feature a $1M buy-in tournament.
